Michael Unterbuchner reached the semi-final for the second successive year after he defeated Willem Mandigers at the quarter-final stage on Friday afternoon. ‘T-Rex’ defeated a Dutch thrower in his 2018 quarterfinal in Richard Veenstra and took another big scalp to reach the final four.

Mandigers would race into a 3-1 advantage early on, chalking up a 3-0 victory in the second set. A spectacular 158 finish with Unterbuchner sat on a double would put the German under the cosh. With the Dutchman looking to extend his lead to three cleat sets, Unterbuchner would find his range. A 104-finish halving the deficit as Mandigers’ standard dropped.

The 31-year-old from Berlin would draw level before a crazy seventh set saw five breaks of throw! Mandigers eventually rounding it off with an ice-cool 68 finish. Unterbuchner would resume control, taking the eighth set as the match went to a decider.

A 94 checkout would hand Unterbuchner the lead, but his opponent had plenty of fight in him yet. A match-winning bullseye was missed as Mandigers swooped, under monumental amounts of pressure he would take a 149 to haul himself level once again. Unterbuchner would record a straight forward hold in the next leg before the match-winning leg would arrive. The 2018 World Trophy finalist booking his place in this year’s Lakeside semi-finals with a heart-stopping 107 checkout, sending a packed Lakeside Country Club delirious.
